Colleton County is a county located in South Carolina, in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. Colleton County had an official population of 38264 in 2000. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 39019, It is the 26th most populous county in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The county comprises an area of 1133.21 square miles (2935 sq km), of which, 1056.36 square miles (2735.96 sq km) of it is land and 76.86 square miles (199.07 sq km) of it is water, makes it the fourth largest by total area in South Carolina. It is ranks seventh in the size of its inland waterways in South Carolina.

As of the census of 2000, there were 38264 people, 14470 households, and 10494 families residing in the county. The population density was 36.2 people per square mile (13.98/kmē), making its South Carolina's fifth least densely populated county. There were 18129 housing units at an average density of 17.2 per square mile (6.64/kmē). The average household size was 2.62 persons, and the average family size was 3.11 persons. In the county Population was distributed with 27.5% under the age of 18, 8% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 24.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 91.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.9 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 39019, The racial makeup of the county was 57.38% White, 40.69% Black or African American, 0.73% American Indian, 0.31% Asian, 0.06% Native Hawaiian, and 0.83% from two or more races.
