Cohoes City is one of the city of Albany County, New York, located towards the Northeastern Region (Mid-Atlantic) of United States. Cohoes City had an official population of 15521 in 2000. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 15025, It is the 121st largest by population in the U.S. state of New York. The city encompasses an area of 4.24 mi˛ (10.98 sq km ), of which, 3.74 square miles (9.69 sq km) of it is land and 0.5 square miles (1.29 sq km) of it is water, giving it the 256th largest by total area among New York.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 15521 people, 6932 households, and 3863 families living in the city. The population density was 4145.8 people per square mile (1600.7/km˛), it would be the 163rd most densely populated city in the U.S. state of New York. There were 7689 housing units at an average density of 2055.9 per square mile (793.79/km˛). The average household size was 2.2 people, and the average family size was 2.91 people. In the city the population was spread out, with 22.4% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 17.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 116.1 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 122.5 females. The median age of the city's population was 37.8 years, the median age of male residents at 35.3 and the median age of female residents at 40.2. The racial makeup of the city was 95.14% White, 2.16% Black or African American, 0.16% American Indian, 0.68% Asian, 0.04% Native Hawaiian, 1.23% from two or more races and 0.59% Other races.
