It is spread over 654.57 mi˛ (1695.33 square kilometre), of which, 629.75 square miles (1631.05 square kilometre ) of it is land and 24.82 square miles (64.28 square kilometre) of it is water, making it Kansas's 32nd smallest county by total area. It is ranks first in the size of its inland waterways in Kansas.

In the county Population was distributed with 26.8% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 24% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.5 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 8409, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 96.46% White, 0.44% Black or African American, 0.65% American Indian, 0.8% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 1.64% from two or more races.
