Codington County, South Dakota


Codington County is a one of the county from South Dakota's 66 counties, located in Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 25897 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 26317, making it the sixth most populous county in South Dakota. The county spans an area of 717.08 square miles (1857.23 sq km), of which, 687.67 square miles (1781.06 sq km) of it is land and 29.41 square miles (76.17 sq km) of it is water, makes it the 21st smallest by total area in South Dakota.

As of the census of 2000, there were 25897 people in the county, organized into 10357 households, and 6872 families living in the county. The population density was 37.7 people per square mile (14.56/kmē), making its South Dakota's fifth most densely populated county. There were 11324 housing units at an average density of 16.5 per square mile (6.37/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.46 persons, and the average family size was 3.04 persons. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 26.8% under the age of 18, 10.4% from 18 to 24, 28% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 98.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.5 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 26317, The racial makeup of the county was 25382 White, 55 Black or African American, 489 American Indian, 124 Asian, 5 Native Hawaiian, and 262 from two or more races.
