Cochran County is a county located in Texas, in the Southern Region (West South Central) of United States. The population of the county was 3730 as per the 2000 census data. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 2977, It is Texas's 28th least populous county. It is spread over 775.31 square miles (2008.04 kmē), of which, 775.22 square miles (2007.81 kmē ) of it is land and 0.09 square miles (0.23 kmē) of it is water, giving it the 45th smallest by total area among Texas's county.

As of the census of 2000, there were 3730 residents, 1309 households, and 1017 families in the county. The population density was 4.8 people per square mile (1.85/kmē), making its Texas's 52nd least densely populated county. There were 1587 housing units at an average density of 2 per square mile (0.77/kmē). The average household size was 2.79 persons, and the average family size was 3.25 persons. In the county Age distribution was 31.5% under the age of 18, 8% from 18 to 24, 24.9% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 108.6 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 107.1 females. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 2977, The racial makeup of the county was 91.23% White, 6.52% Black or African American, 1.18% American Indian, 0.37% Asian, 0.07% Native Hawaiian, and 0.64% from two or more races.
