Clinton County is one of the 62 county of New York, located towards the Northeastern Region (Mid-Atlantic) of United States. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 79894 inhabitants. The July 2008 population estimate is 81947, making it the 33rd most populous county in New York. The county encompasses an area of 1117.61 square miles (2894.6 kmē ), of which, 1038.95 square miles (2690.87 kmē) of it is land and 78.67 square miles (203.75 kmē) of it is water, giving it the 20th largest by total area among New York's county.

The population density was 76.9 people per square mile (29.69/kmē), it is New York's 42nd most densely populated county. There were 33091 housing units at an average density of 31.9 per square mile (12.32/kmē). The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.98. Age range in the county was well distributed with 23% under the age of 18, 12.4% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 11.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 104.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 104.6 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 81947, The racial makeup of the county was 93.94% White, 3.82% Black or African American, 0.39% American Indian, 0.9% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, and 0.93% from two or more races.
