Cleveland County is a one of the county from Arkansas's 75 counties, located in Southern Region (West South Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 8571. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 8665, making it Arkansas's ninth smallest county. It is spread over 598.8 sq mi (1550.88 kmē), of which, 597.74 square miles (1548.14 kmē ) of it is land and 1.06 square miles (2.75 kmē) of it is water, making it Arkansas's 15th smallest county by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 8571 people in the county, organized into 3273 households, and 2515 families living in the county. The population density was 14.3 people per square mile (5.52/kmē), it would be the seventh least densely populated county in the U.S. state of Arkansas. There were 3834 housing units at an average density of 6.4 per square mile (2.47/kmē). The average household size was 2.6 people, and the average family size was 3 people. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 26.2% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 24.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.2 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 8665, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 7296 White, 1234 Black or African American, 29 American Indian, 14 Asian, 3 Native Hawaiian, and 89 from two or more races.
