Clayton County is a one of the county from Iowa's 99 counties, located in Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. Clayton County had an official population of 18678 in 2000. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 17566, It is the 40th largest county by population in the U.S. state of Iowa. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 792.81 square miles (2053.37 kmē), of which, 778.81 square miles (2017.11 kmē) of it is land and 14 square miles (36.26 kmē) of it is water, making it the fifth largest by size in Iowa. It is ranks ninth in the size of its inland waterways in Iowa.
