Clayton County is a United States county located in the United States of Georgia. It is home to over 236517 people (2000 census). As of July 2008, the estimated population was 273718, making it Georgia's fifth largest county. The county spans an area of 144.28 square miles (373.68 square kilometre), of which, 142.62 square miles (369.38 square kilometre) of it is land and 1.66 square miles (4.3 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the third smallest by total area in Georgia.

The population density was 1658.4 people per square mile (640.31/kmē), it is the third most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Georgia. There were 86461 housing units at an average density of 606.2 per square mile (234.06/kmē). The average household size was 2.84 and the average family size was 3.3. The population's age distribution was 30% under the age of 18, 10.4% from 18 to 24, 35.4% from 25 to 44, 18.4% from 45 to 64, and 5.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.9 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 273718, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 29.95% White, 62.62% Black or African American, 0.53% American Indian, 5.02% Asian, 0.12% Native Hawaiian, and 1.77% from two or more races.
