Clay County, West Virginia is a county located in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. The population of the county was 10330 as per the 2000 census data. The July 2008 population estimate is 10075, It is the 11th smallest county by population in the U.S. state of West Virginia. It is spread over 343.82 mi˛ (890.49 square kilometre), of which, 342.4 square miles (886.81 square kilometre ) of it is land and 1.42 square miles (3.68 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 37th largest by area in the U.S. state of West Virginia.

As of the census of 2000, there were 10330 people in the county, organized into 4020 households, and 2942 families living in the county. The population density was 30.2 people per square mile (11.66/km˛), it is 14th least densely populated county in West Virginia. There were 4836 housing units at an average density of 14.1 per square mile (5.44/km˛). The average household size was 2.55 persons, and the average family size was 3.01 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 25.6% under the age of 18, 9% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 97.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.3 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 10075, The racial makeup of the county was 9876 White, 20 Black or African American, 75 American Indian, 2 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 102 from two or more races.
