Clay County is a county located in the United States of Tennessee. The population of county in 2000 stood at 7976 as per the Census data. In July 2008, its estimated population was 7794, making it Tennessee's seventh smallest county. The county comprises an area of 259.25 square miles (671.45 kmē), of which, 236.11 square miles (611.52 kmē) of it is land and 23.14 square miles (59.93 kmē) of it is water, making it Tennessee's 12th smallest county by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 7976 people, 3379 households, and 2333 families residing in the county. The population density was 33.8 people per square mile (13.05/kmē), making its Tennessee's tenth least densely populated county. There were 3959 housing units at an average density of 16.8 per square mile (6.49/kmē). The average household size was 2.33 people, and the average family size was 2.8 people. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 21.5% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 27.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 7794, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 7483 White, 166 Black or African American, 43 American Indian, 21 Asian, 9 Native Hawaiian, and 72 from two or more races.
