Clay County is a county located in South Dakota, in the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 13537 inhabitants. The July 2008 population estimate is 13605, It is the 15th most populous county in the U.S. state of South Dakota. The county has a total area of 416.7 mi˛ (1079.25 square kilometre), of which, 411.6 square miles (1066.04 square kilometre) of it is land and 5.1 square miles (13.21 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the smallest in terms of geographical size.

As of the census of 2000, there were 13537 people in the county, organized into 4878 households, and 2720 families residing in the county. The population density was 32.9 people per square mile (12.7/km˛), it is the seventh most populated county in terms of population density. There were 5438 housing units at an average density of 13.2 per square mile (5.1/km˛). The average household size was 2.32 persons, and the average family size was 2.93 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 18.8% under the age of 18, 31.5% from 18 to 24, 23.8% from 25 to 44, 15.8% from 45 to 64, and 10.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.5 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 13605, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 12567 White, 162 Black or African American, 348 American Indian, 335 Asian, 1 Native Hawaiian, and 192 from two or more races.
