Clay County, North Carolina


Clay County is a county in the United States of North Carolina. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 8775 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 10389, giving it the sixth smallest population among North Carolina's county. It covers total area of 220.6 miē (571.35 kmē), of which, 214.7 square miles (556.07 kmē) of it is land and 5.89 square miles (15.26 kmē) of it is water, it is the smallest by area in the U.S. state of North Carolina.

As of the census of 2000, there were 8775 people, 3847 households, and 2727 families residing in the county. The population density was 40.9 people per square mile (15.79/kmē), it is North Carolina's 12th least densely populated county. There were 5425 housing units at an average density of 25.3 per square mile (9.77/kmē). The average household size was 2.25 persons, and the average family size was 2.68 persons. In the county Population was distributed with 18.6% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 22.8% from 25 to 44, 29.8% from 45 to 64, and 22.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.4 males. Its population was estimated at 10389 in July 2008, The racial makeup of the county was 97.69% White, 1.3% Black or African American, 0.35% American Indian, 0.08% Asian, 0.06% Native Hawaiian, and 0.53% from two or more races.
