Clay County, Nebraska is a county of the United States of Nebraska. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 7039 inhabitants. Its population was estimated at 6270 in July 2008, It is the 49th most populous county in the U.S. state of Nebraska. It has total area of 573.53 miē (1485.44 kmē), of which, 573.03 square miles (1484.14 kmē) of it is land and 0.49 square miles (1.27 kmē) of it is water, it is the 60th largest by area in the U.S. state of Nebraska.

The population density was 12.3 people per square mile (4.75/kmē), making it the 41st most densely populated county in Nebraska. There were 3066 housing units at an average density of 5.4 per square mile (2.08/kmē). The average household size was 2.52 persons, and the average family size was 3.03 persons. The population's age distribution was 27.3% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 18% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 6270, The racial makeup of the county was 98.47% White, 0.38% Black or African American, 0.51% American Indian, 0.32% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 0.32% from two or more races.
