Clay County is one of the 115 county of Missouri, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 184006 inhabitants. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 215707, It is seventh most populous county in Missouri. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 408.86 square miles (1058.94 sq km), of which, 396.35 square miles (1026.54 sq km) of it is land and 12.52 square miles (32.43 sq km) of it is water, giving it the fifth smallest by total area among Missouri's county.

As of the census of 2000, there were 184006 people in the county, organized into 72558 households, and 50120 families residing in the county. The population density was 464.3 people per square mile (179.27/kmē), it is Missouri's fifth most densely populated county. There were 76230 housing units at an average density of 192.3 per square mile (74.25/kmē). The average household size was 2.5 persons, and the average family size was 3 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 25.8% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 32.3% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.8 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 215707, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 196213 White, 10342 Black or African American, 1089 American Indian, 4265 Asian, 324 Native Hawaiian, and 3474 from two or more races.
