Clay County is a county located in Mississippi, in the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. The population of county in 2000 stood at 21979 as per the Census data. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 20860, making it Mississippi's 46th largest county. It is spread over 416.02 mi˛ (1077.49 sq km), of which, 408.56 square miles (1058.17 sq km ) of it is land and 7.46 square miles (19.32 sq km) of it is water, it is the tenth smallest in terms of geographical size.

The population density was 53.8 people per square mile (20.77/km˛), it would be the 29th most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Mississippi. There were 8810 housing units at an average density of 21.6 per square mile (8.34/km˛). It has an average household size was 2.64 persons, and the average family size was 3.19 persons. Age range in the county was well distributed with 28.8% under the age of 18, 10.4% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 89.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.6 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 20860, The racial makeup of the county was 42.67% White, 56.62% Black or African American, 0.06% American Indian, 0.16% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 0.48% from two or more races.
