Clay County is a county located in the United States of Minnesota. The population of county in 2000 stood at 51229 as per the Census data. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 55767, making it the 17th most populous county in Minnesota. Its area is just over 1052.74 sq mi (2726.58 square kilometre), of which, 1045.24 square miles (2707.16 square kilometre) of it is land and 7.49 square miles (19.4 square kilometre) of it is water, making it Minnesota's 20th largest county by total area.

The population density was 49 people per square mile (18.92/kmē), it is the 27th most populated county in terms of population density. There were 19746 housing units at an average density of 18.9 per square mile (7.3/kmē). The average household size was 2.53 persons, and the average family size was 3.07 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 25% under the age of 18, 17.1% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 19.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 106.8 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 112.2 females. Its population was estimated at 55767 in July 2008, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 95.33% White, 0.69% Black or African American, 1.53% American Indian, 1.01% Asian, 0.04% Native Hawaiian, and 1.4% from two or more races.
