Clay County is a one of the county from Kentucky's 120 counties, located in Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 24556 inhabitants. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 23930, It is the 49th largest in terms of population. The county comprises an area of 471.08 square miles (1220.09 kmē), of which, 471.01 square miles (1219.91 kmē) of it is land and 0.07 square miles (0.18 kmē) of it is water, makes it the 19th largest by total area in Kentucky.


According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 24556 residents, 8556 households, and 6440 families in the county. The population density was 52.1 people per square mile (20.12/kmē), it is the 67th most populated county in terms of population density. There were 9439 housing units at an average density of 20 per square mile (7.72/kmē). The average household size was 2.62 people, and the average family size was 3.06 people. In the county the population was spread out, with 25.4% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 32.6% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 10.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 111.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 112.6 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 23930, The racial makeup of the county was 22424 White, 1210 Black or African American, 55 American Indian, 30 Asian, 4 Native Hawaiian, and 207 from two or more races.
