Clay County is a United States county located in the United States of Kansas. Clay County had an official population of 8822 in 2000. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 8859, making it Kansas's 46th largest county. It is spread over 655.44 square miles (1697.58 sq km), of which, 643.84 square miles (1667.54 sq km ) of it is land and 11.6 square miles (30.04 sq km) of it is water, making it the 33rd smallest by size in Kansas.

For every 100 males there were 100.9 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 104.6 females. In July 2008, its estimated population was 8859, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 8603 White, 86 Black or African American, 41 American Indian, 15 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 114 from two or more races.
