Clay County is a one of the county from Iowa's 99 counties, located in Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 17372 inhabitants. The July 2008 population estimate is 16691, It is Iowa's 44th most populous county. The county spans an area of 572.51 miē (1482.79 kmē), of which, 568.89 square miles (1473.42 kmē) of it is land and 3.63 square miles (9.4 kmē) of it is water, makes it the 50th largest by total area in Iowa.

In the county the population was distributed as follows: 24.7% under the age of 18, 8% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 18% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.9 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 16691, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 98.15% White, 0.26% Black or African American, 0.17% American Indian, 0.78% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, and 0.61% from two or more races.
