Clay County is a one of the county from Illinois's 102 counties, located in Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. In 2000, the population was 14560. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 13767, It is the 23rd least populous county in the U.S. state of Illinois. The county extends throughout a territory of 469.84 mi˛ (1216.88 square kilometre ), of which, 469.25 square miles (1215.35 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.59 square miles (1.53 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 60th largest in terms of geographical size.

The population's age distribution was 23.9% under the age of 18, 8% from 18 to 24, 25.9% from 25 to 44, 23% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 92.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.1 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 13767, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 97.97% White, 0.37% Black or African American, 0.33% American Indian, 0.82% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 0.49% from two or more races.
