Clay County is a county located in Arkansas, in the Southern Region (West South Central) of United States. The population of the county was 17609 as per the 2000 census data. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 15845, It is Arkansas's 50th most populous county. The county spans an area of 641.42 mi˛ (1661.27 square kilometre), of which, 639.3 square miles (1655.78 square kilometre) of it is land and 2.12 square miles (5.49 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 42nd largest in terms of geographical size.

For every 100 females there were 93.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 15845, The racial makeup of the county was 15441 White, 94 Black or African American, 130 American Indian, 30 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 150 from two or more races.
