Clay County is a United States county located in the United States of Alabama. The population of county in 2000 stood at 14254 as per the Census data. In July 2008, its estimated population was 13809, making it Alabama's tenth smallest county. The county comprises an area of 606 sq mi (1569.53 kmē), of which, 605.07 square miles (1567.12 kmē) of it is land and 0.93 square miles (2.41 kmē) of it is water, making it Alabama's 13th smallest county by total area.

The population density was 23.6 people per square mile (9.11/kmē), making it the 14th least densely populated county in Alabama. There were 6612 housing units at an average density of 10.9 per square mile (4.21/kmē). The average household size was 2.43 persons, and the average family size was 2.93 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 23.8% under the age of 18, 8% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.1 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 13809, The racial makeup of the county was 11457 White, 2148 Black or African American, 46 American Indian, 13 Asian, 3 Native Hawaiian, and 142 from two or more races.
