Clarke County is one of the 135 county of Virginia, located towards the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 12652 inhabitants. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 14458, It is the 36th smallest in terms of population. The county comprises an area of 178.19 sq mi (461.51 square kilometre), of which, 176.62 square miles (457.44 square kilometre) of it is land and 1.57 square miles (4.07 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 40th smallest by size in Virginia.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 12652 people, 4942 households, and 3514 families residing in the county. The population density was 71.6 people per square mile (27.64/kmē), it is Virginia's 81st most densely populated county. There were 5388 housing units at an average density of 30.5 per square mile (11.78/kmē). The average household size was 2.5 and the average family size was 2.97. In the county Age distribution was 23.4% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 27.1% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 98 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.6 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 14458, The racial makeup of the county was 91.89% White, 5.97% Black or African American, 0.17% American Indian, 1.04% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 0.91% from two or more races.
