Clarke County is a county located in the United States of Mississippi. As of 2000 the population was 17955. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 17378, It is the 55th largest in terms of population. It is spread over 693.41 sq mi (1795.92 kmē), of which, 691.27 square miles (1790.38 kmē ) of it is land and 2.14 square miles (5.54 kmē) of it is water, it is the 24th largest by area in the U.S. state of Mississippi.

As of the census of 2000, there were 17955 people, 6978 households, and 5025 families living in the county. The population density was 26 people per square mile (10.04/kmē), making it the 21st least densely populated county in Mississippi. There were 8100 housing units at an average density of 11.7 per square mile (4.52/kmē). The average household size was 2.55 persons, and the average family size was 3.06 persons. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 26.8% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 91.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.1 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 17378, The racial makeup of the county was 64.52% White, 34.88% Black or African American, 0.13% American Indian, 0.12% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 0.35% from two or more races.
