It is spread over 504.88 mi˛ (1307.63 sq km), of which, 501.5 square miles (1298.88 sq km ) of it is land and 3.38 square miles (8.75 sq km) of it is water, it is the 54th largest by area in the U.S. state of Illinois.

The population density was 33.9 people per square mile (13.09/km˛), it would be the 28th least densely populated county in the U.S. state of Illinois. There were 7816 housing units at an average density of 15.6 per square mile (6.02/km˛). The average household size was 2.4 and the average family size was 2.94. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 24.9% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and 18% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.8 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 16834, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 16537 White, 83 Black or African American, 32 American Indian, 32 Asian, 5 Native Hawaiian, and 145 from two or more races.
