The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 30312, making it Michigan's 48th largest county. The county extends throughout a territory of 575.22 sq mi (1489.81 sq km ), of which, 566.8 square miles (1468.01 sq km) of it is land and 8.42 square miles (21.81 sq km) of it is water, it is the 21st smallest by area in the U.S. state of Michigan.

In the county Population was distributed with 24.4% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 24.9% from 25 to 44, 26.4% from 45 to 64, and 17.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.6 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 30312, The racial makeup of the county was 97.04% White, 0.63% Black or African American, 0.83% American Indian, 0.33% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 1.15% from two or more races.
