Citrus County, Florida is a county located in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 118085 inhabitants. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 141416, It is the 31st largest county by population in the U.S. state of Florida. It has total area of 773.15 square miles (2002.45 kmē), of which, 583.81 square miles (1512.06 kmē) of it is land and 189.34 square miles (490.39 kmē) of it is water, makes it the 38th largest by total area in Florida.

As of the census of 2000, there were 118085 people in the county, organized into 52634 households, and 36339 families residing in the county. The population density was 202.3 people per square mile (78.11/kmē), it is the 26th most populated county in terms of population density. There were 62204 housing units at an average density of 106.5 per square mile (41.12/kmē). The average household size was 2.2 people, and the average family size was 2.6 people. In the Citrus County, 17.2% of the population was under the age of 18, 4.6% were 18 to 24, 19.1% were 25 to 44, 26.9% were 45 to 64, and 32.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 92.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.6 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 141416, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 93.97% White, 3.35% Black or African American, 0.34% American Indian, 1.2% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, and 1.12% from two or more races.
