Chowan County is one of the 100 county of North Carolina, located towards the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. The county has a population of 14526 as per the 2000 census data. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 14565, It is the 13th smallest county by population in the U.S. state of North Carolina. The county encompasses an area of 233.31 square miles (604.27 sq km ), of which, 172.64 square miles (447.14 sq km) of it is land and 60.67 square miles (157.13 sq km) of it is water, making it North Carolina's third smallest county by total area.

The population density was 84.1 people per square mile (32.47/kmē), it is 59th most densely populated county in North Carolina. There were 6443 housing units at an average density of 37.3 per square mile (14.4/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.48 persons, and the average family size was 2.94 persons. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 23.9% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 24.1% from 25 to 44, 24.4% from 45 to 64, and 17.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 88.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.6 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 14565, The racial makeup of the county was 9155 White, 5229 Black or African American, 38 American Indian, 40 Asian, 1 Native Hawaiian, and 102 from two or more races.
