Chouteau County is a United States county located in the United States of Montana. In 2000, the population was 5970. In July 2008, its estimated population was 5225, It is 33rd most populous county in Montana. It has total area of 3997 mi˛ (10352.18 square kilometre), of which, 3973.24 square miles (10290.64 square kilometre) of it is land and 23.76 square miles (61.54 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the tenth largest by area in the U.S. state of Montana.

The population density was 1.5 people per square mile (0.58/km˛), it would be the 14th least densely populated county in the U.S. state of Montana. There were 2776 housing units at an average density of 0.7 per square mile (0.27/km˛). The average household size was 2.59 people, and the average family size was 3.11 people. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 28.8% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 24.1% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and 17.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 100.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.1 males. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 5225, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 4282 White, 5 Black or African American, 866 American Indian, 15 Asian, 6 Native Hawaiian, and 51 from two or more races.
