Chittenden County is a United States county located in the United States of Vermont. It is home to over 146571 people (2000 census). As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 152782, giving it the largest population among Vermont's county. The county spans an area of 619.64 square miles (1604.86 kmē), of which, 539.04 square miles (1396.11 kmē) of it is land and 80.6 square miles (208.75 kmē) of it is water, it is the third smallest by area in the U.S. state of Vermont. It is ranks second in the size of its inland waterways in Vermont.

As of the census of 2000, there were 146571 people in the county, organized into 56452 households, and 35168 families living in the county. The population density was 271.9 people per square mile (104.98/kmē), making it the most densely populated county in Vermont. There were 58864 housing units at an average density of 109.2 per square mile (42.16/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.47 persons, and the average family size was 3.02 persons. The population's age distribution was 23.5% under the age of 18, 13.1% from 18 to 24, 32% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 9.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.3 males. Its population was estimated at 152782 in July 2008, The racial makeup of the county was 143770 White, 2627 Black or African American, 507 American Indian, 3998 Asian, 66 Native Hawaiian, and 1814 from two or more races.
