Chippewa County is a one of the county from Minnesota's 87 counties, located in Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 13088 inhabitants. The July 2008 population estimate is 12414, making it Minnesota's 26th smallest county. It has total area of 587.83 square miles (1522.47 square kilometre), of which, 582.8 square miles (1509.45 square kilometre) of it is land and 5.02 square miles (13 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 56th largest by area in the U.S. state of Minnesota.

As of the census of 2000, there were 13088 people, 5361 households, and 3599 families living in the county. The population density was 22.5 people per square mile (8.69/kmē), it is the 51st most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Minnesota. There were 5855 housing units at an average density of 10 per square mile (3.86/kmē). The average household size was 2.39 people, and the average family size was 2.96 people. In the county the population was spread out, with 25.4% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 24.5% from 25 to 44, 23% from 45 to 64, and 20% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 105.5 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 109.5 females. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 12414, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 12039 White, 39 Black or African American, 168 American Indian, 46 Asian, 4 Native Hawaiian, and 118 from two or more races.
