Chippewa County, Michigan is a county of the United States of Michigan. It is home to over 38543 people (2000 census). Its population was estimated at 38971 in July 2008, It is the 42nd largest in terms of population. The county comprises an area of 2697.98 square miles (6987.74 square kilometre), of which, 1561.06 square miles (4043.13 square kilometre) of it is land and 1136.92 square miles (2944.61 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the fifth largest in terms of geographical size. It is ranks ninth in the size of its inland waterways in Michigan.

As of the census of 2000, there were 38543 people in the county, organized into 13474 households, and 8962 families residing in the county. The population density was 24.7 people per square mile (9.54/kmē), making its Michigan's 16th least densely populated county. There were 19430 housing units at an average density of 12.4 per square mile (4.79/kmē). The average household size was 2.42 persons, and the average family size was 2.93 persons. In the county Age distribution was 21.3% under the age of 18, 11.9% from 18 to 24, 31.8% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 125.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 132.1 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 38971, The racial makeup of the county was 75.77% White, 6.83% Black or African American, 11.71% American Indian, 0.77% Asian, 0.07% Native Hawaiian, and 4.85% from two or more races.
