The county comprises an area of 713.61 sq mi (1848.24 sq km), of which, 710.34 square miles (1839.77 sq km) of it is land and 3.27 square miles (8.47 sq km) of it is water, it is the 37th smallest by area in the U.S. state of Texas.

The population density was 10.8 people per square mile (4.17/kmē), it is the 165th most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Texas. In the county the population was spread out, with 22.1% under the age of 18, 12.1% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 15.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 70.2 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 66.9 females. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 7536, The racial makeup of the county was 6150 White, 1207 Black or African American, 32 American Indian, 50 Asian, 12 Native Hawaiian, and 85 from two or more races.
