Chicago City is a United States city located in the Cook and DuPage counties, Illinois, United States. As of 2000 the population was 2896016. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 2853114, making it the most populous in Illinois. The city has a total area of 234 sq mi (606.06 sq km), of which, 227.13 square miles (588.26 sq km) of it is land and 6.87 square miles (17.79 sq km) of it is water, it is the largest by area in the U.S. state of Illinois. It is ranks first in the size of its inland waterways in Illinois.

As of the census of 2000, there were 2896016 people in the city, organized into 1061928 households, and 632558 families residing in the city. The population density was 12750.3 people per square mile (4922.92/kmē), it is the fifth most populated city in terms of population density. There were 1152868 housing units at an average density of 5075.8 per square mile (1959.78/kmē). The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.5. In the city the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 11.2% from 18 to 24, 33.4% from 25 to 44, 18.9% from 45 to 64, and 10.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.1 males. The median age of the city's population was 31.5 years, the median age of male residents at 30.5 and the median age of female residents at 32.6. The racial makeup of the city was 1215315 White, 1065009 Black or African American, 10290 American Indian, 125974 Asian, 1788 Native Hawaiian, 84437 from two or more races and 393203 Ohter races.
