Chesterfield County is a United States county located in the United States of South Carolina. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 42768 inhabitants. In July 2008, its estimated population was 42882, giving it the 25th largest population among South Carolina's county. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 805.78 mi˛ (2086.96 square kilometre), of which, 798.6 square miles (2068.36 square kilometre) of it is land and 7.18 square miles (18.6 square kilometre) of it is water, making it South Carolina's 11th largest county by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 42768 people in the county, organized into 16557 households, and 11703 families residing in the county. The population density was 53.6 people per square mile (20.7/km˛), making it the 31st most densely populated county in South Carolina. There were 18818 housing units at an average density of 23.6 per square mile (9.11/km˛). The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.05. In the county Age distribution was 26.6% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 29% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 12% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 107.3 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 111.1 females. Its population was estimated at 42882 in July 2008, The racial makeup of the county was 27745 White, 14388 Black or African American, 175 American Indian, 214 Asian, 11 Native Hawaiian, and 349 from two or more races.
