Its population was estimated at 32618 in July 2008, It is South Carolina's 31st most populous county. It is spread over 586.16 square miles (1518.15 kmē), of which, 580.52 square miles (1503.54 kmē ) of it is land and 5.64 square miles (14.61 kmē) of it is water, making it the 26th largest by size in South Carolina.

For every 100 females there were 92.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.6 males.
