Chester City is a city located in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, in the Northeastern Region (Mid-Atlantic) of United States. Chester City had an official population of 36854 in 2000. The July 2008 population estimate is 36564, giving it the 16th largest population among Pennsylvania. The city spans an area of 6.01 mi˛ (15.57 sq km), of which, 4.85 square miles (12.56 sq km) of it is land and 1.17 square miles (3.03 sq km) of it is water, it is the 84th largest by area in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. It is ranks eighth in the size of its inland waterways in Pennsylvania.

As of the census of 2000, there were 36854 people, 12814 households, and 8126 families residing in the city. The population density was 7605.4 people per square mile (2936.46/km˛), giving it the 39th most densely populated city among the Pennsylvania. There were 14976 housing units at an average density of 3087.8 per square mile (1192.21/km˛). The average household size was 2.64 persons, and the average family size was 3.34 persons. Age range in the city was well distributed with 29.8% under the age of 18, 13% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 18.6% from 45 to 64, and 11.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 89.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.7 males. The median age of the city's population was 30.6 years, The median age of males was 28.5 years, for females the median age was 32.5 years. The racial or ethnic makeup of the city was 18.94% White, 75.7% Black or African American, 0.2% American Indian, 0.61% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, 1.51% from two or more races and 3.03% Other races.
