It is the 50th largest by population in the U.S. state of Virginia. It has total area of 13.11 mi˛ (33.95 sq km), of which, 12.99 square miles (33.64 sq km) of it is land and 0.12 square miles (0.31 sq km) of it is water, making it Virginia's 42nd largest by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 17890 residents, 6727 households, and 5116 families in the census designated place.
