Cherokee County is a county in the United States of Alabama. According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Cherokee County is home to 23988 inhabitants. Its population was estimated at 24545 in July 2008, It is the 42nd most populous county in the U.S. state of Alabama. The county encompasses an area of 599.95 square miles (1553.86 sq km ), of which, 553.12 square miles (1432.57 sq km) of it is land and 46.83 square miles (121.29 sq km) of it is water, it is the ninth smallest by area in the U.S. state of Alabama. It is ranks seventh in the size of its inland waterways in Alabama.

As of the census of 2000, there were 23988 people in the county, organized into 9719 households, and 7202 families residing in the county. The population density was 43.4 people per square mile (16.76/kmē), it is Alabama's 37th most densely populated county. There were 14025 housing units at an average density of 25.4 per square mile (9.81/kmē). The average household size was 2.43 persons, and the average family size was 2.86 persons. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 26.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.5 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 24545, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 22849 White, 1337 Black or African American, 75 American Indian, 60 Asian, 1 Native Hawaiian, and 223 from two or more races.
