Cherokee City is one of the city of Cherokee County, Iowa, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. Cherokee City had an official population of 5369 in 2000. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 4697, It is the 67th largest by population in the U.S. state of Iowa. The city encompasses an area of 6.43 mi˛ (16.65 sq km ), of which, 6.41 square miles (16.6 sq km) of it is land and 0.02 square miles (0.05 sq km) of it is water, giving it the 51st largest by total area among Iowa.

As of the census of 2000, there were 5369 people, 2362 households, and 1393 families living in the city. The population density was 837.8 people per square mile (323.48/km˛), it is the 422nd most densely populated city in the U.S. state of Iowa. There were 2556 housing units at an average density of 398.8 per square mile (153.98/km˛). The average household size was 2.16 persons, and the average family size was 2.82 persons. In the Cherokee City, 23.2% of the population was under the age of 18, 7.2% were 18 to 24, 22.9% were 25 to 44, 24.9% were 45 to 64, and 21.9% who were 65 or older.
