Chaves County is a county located in New Mexico, in the Western Region (Mountain) of United States. In 2000, the population was 61382. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 63060, giving it the eighth largest population among New Mexico's county. Its area is just over 6075.07 square miles (15734.36 sq km), of which, 6070.86 square miles (15723.46 sq km) of it is land and 4.21 square miles (10.9 sq km) of it is water, making it the fourth largest by size in New Mexico.

The population density was 10.1 people per square mile (3.9/kmē), it would be the 13th most densely populated county in the U.S. state of New Mexico. There were 25647 housing units at an average density of 4.2 per square mile (1.62/kmē). The average household size was 2.66 people, and the average family size was 3.17 people. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 29.1% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.6 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 63060, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 93.57% White, 2.71% Black or African American, 1.43% American Indian, 0.88% Asian, 0.08% Native Hawaiian, and 1.33% from two or more races.
