Chautauqua County is a one of the county from New York's 62 counties, located in Northeastern Region (Mid-Atlantic) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 139750 inhabitants. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 133789, making it the 23rd most populous county in New York. The county has a total area of 1500.02 sq mi (3885.03 sq km), of which, 1062.05 square miles (2750.7 sq km) of it is land and 437.97 square miles (1134.34 sq km) of it is water, giving it the seventh largest by total area among New York's county. It is ranks sixth in the size of its inland waterways in New York.

As of the census of 2000, there were 139750 people, 54515 households, and 35966 families living in the county. The population density was 131.6 people per square mile (50.81/kmē), it would be the 28th most densely populated county in the U.S. state of New York. There were 64900 housing units at an average density of 61.1 per square mile (23.59/kmē). The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.99. In the county Age distribution was 24.5% under the age of 18, 10.3% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 23% from 45 to 64, and 16% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males. Its population was estimated at 133789 in July 2008, The racial makeup of the county was 127248 White, 3531 Black or African American, 789 American Indian, 624 Asian, 46 Native Hawaiian, and 1551 from two or more races.
