Chautauqua County, Kansas is a county of the United States of Kansas. As of 2000 the population was 4359. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 3768, It is the 28th smallest in terms of population. It is spread over 644.83 miē (1670.1 kmē), of which, 641.69 square miles (1661.97 kmē ) of it is land and 3.14 square miles (8.13 kmē) of it is water, it is the 28th smallest by area in the U.S. state of Kansas.

The population density was 6.8 people per square mile (2.63/kmē), it is 69th most densely populated county in Kansas. There were 2169 housing units at an average density of 3.4 per square mile (1.31/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.34 persons, and the average family size was 2.87 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 23.4% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 20.9% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 24.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 106.9 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 109.7 females. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 3768, The racial makeup of the county was 92.52% White, 0.37% Black or African American, 4.27% American Indian, 0.11% Asian, 0.05% Native Hawaiian, and 2.68% from two or more races.
