Chatham County is one of the 100 county of North Carolina, located towards the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 49329 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 63077, giving it the 41st largest population among North Carolina's county. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 709.05 sq mi (1836.43 kmē), of which, 682.85 square miles (1768.57 kmē) of it is land and 26.19 square miles (67.83 kmē) of it is water, making it the 20th largest by size in North Carolina.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 49329 people, 19741 households, and 13855 families residing in the county. The population density was 72.2 people per square mile (27.88/kmē), it is 64th most densely populated county in North Carolina. There were 21358 housing units at an average density of 31.3 per square mile (12.08/kmē). The average household size was 2.47 persons, and the average family size was 2.91 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 22.5% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 30.4% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.8 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 63077, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 52530 White, 8383 Black or African American, 270 American Indian, 1270 Asian, 35 Native Hawaiian, and 589 from two or more races.
