Chatham County is a county located in Georgia, in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. In 2000, the population was 232048. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 251120, It is sixth most populous county in Georgia. Its area is just over 632.28 square miles (1637.6 square kilometre), of which, 438.11 square miles (1134.7 square kilometre) of it is land and 194.17 square miles (502.9 square kilometre) of it is water, giving it the 12th largest by total area among Georgia's county. It is ranks first in the size of its inland waterways in Georgia.

As of the census of 2000, there were 232048 people in the county, organized into 89865 households, and 59431 families residing in the county. The population density was 529.7 people per square mile (204.52/kmē), it is 11th most densely populated county in Georgia. There were 99683 housing units at an average density of 227.5 per square mile (87.84/kmē). The average household size was 2.49 people, and the average family size was 3.05 people. In the county Age distribution was 25% under the age of 18, 11.2% from 18 to 24, 29.5% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 107.6 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 111.9 females. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 251120, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 55.61% White, 40.39% Black or African American, 0.33% American Indian, 2.2% Asian, 0.08% Native Hawaiian, and 1.4% from two or more races.
