The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 12248, It is the 29th smallest in terms of population. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 477.44 sq mi (1236.56 square kilometre), of which, 474.99 square miles (1230.22 square kilometre) of it is land and 2.45 square miles (6.35 square kilometre) of it is water, giving it the 33rd largest by total area among Virginia's county.
