Charleston County is a county located in South Carolina, in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. The population of the county was 309969 as per the 2000 census data. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 348046, It is South Carolina's third most populous county. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1358.11 miē (3517.49 kmē), of which, 918.51 square miles (2378.93 kmē) of it is land and 439.61 square miles (1138.58 kmē) of it is water, it is the largest by area in the U.S. state of South Carolina. It is ranks first in the size of its inland waterways in South Carolina.

The population density was 337.5 people per square mile (130.31/kmē), giving it the third most densely populated county among the South Carolina. There were 141031 housing units at an average density of 153.5 per square mile (59.27/kmē). The average household size was 2.42 people, and the average family size was 3.01 people. The population's age distribution was 23.7% under the age of 18, 12% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 22% from 45 to 64, and 11.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.5 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 348046, The racial makeup of the county was 229748 White, 107327 Black or African American, 1301 American Indian, 5189 Asian, 247 Native Hawaiian, and 4234 from two or more races.
