Charleston City, Charleston and Berkeley counties, South Carolina is a city located in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. Charleston City had an official population of 96650 in 2000. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the city is 111978, giving it the second largest population among South Carolina. It is spread over 114.1 mi˛ (295.52 sq km), of which, 96.99 square miles (251.2 sq km ) of it is land and 17.11 square miles (44.31 sq km) of it is water, giving it the second largest by total area among South Carolina. It is ranks first in the size of its inland waterways in South Carolina.

As of the census of 2000, there were 96650 people, 40791 households, and 22159 families residing in the city. The population density was 996.5 people per square mile (384.75/km˛), it is South Carolina's 117th most densely populated city. There were 44563 housing units at an average density of 459.5 per square mile (177.41/km˛). The average household size was 2.23 persons, and the average family size was 2.92 persons. In the city the population was spread out, with 20% under the age of 18, 17.2% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 20.5% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who were 65 or older.
