As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 8906, It is the 20th most populous county in the U.S. state of South Dakota. The county encompasses an area of 1150.19 sq mi (2978.98 sq km ), of which, 1097.57 square miles (2842.69 sq km) of it is land and 52.61 square miles (136.26 sq km) of it is water, it is the 26th largest by area in the U.S. state of South Dakota. It is ranks eighth in the size of its inland waterways in South Dakota.

The population density was 8.5 people per square mile (3.28/kmē), making its South Dakota's 23rd most densely populated county. There were 3853 housing units at an average density of 3.5 per square mile (1.35/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.74 persons, and the average family size was 3.37 persons. In the county Population was distributed with 32% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 23.2% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 17.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.1 males. Its population was estimated at 8906 in July 2008, The racial makeup of the county was 66.35% White, 0.33% Black or African American, 31.45% American Indian, 0.15% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 1.72% from two or more races.
